TrailLab is a quiet, ad-friendly lab of calculators and planners built for people who actually go outside — trail runners, day hikers, backpackers, ultralight campers, stargazers. No gym-bro fluff. No signup. No data harvesting.
Each tool was built because the generic online version was missing something we wanted. Click any card to open the tool.
MET × terrain × pack weight × altitude.
Body-weight ratio + category breakdown.
Sweat rate + climate + electrolyte timing.
Composite rating: distance + gain + technical.
Sync mixed-ability hikers on one pace.
Estimate rest quality from ground + temp + gear.
Log wear hours; know when boots are trail-ready.
Daily calories + macro split by trip intensity.
Wicking / insulating / shell system builder.
When to refill based on pace + heat + pack size.
Skin-type safe minutes under any UV index.
Smart reapply alerts with sweat + water loss.
Photo-quality windows with cloud cover factor.
Bortle estimate from local inputs.
Required lumens per trail type + battery life.
Our hiking calorie calculator factors pack weight + terrain coefficient + altitude, not just weight and time. Our backpack tool gives body-weight ratios by category. Our trail pace calculator returns Grade-Adjusted Pace — what the trail community actually uses.
Every tool page tells you what the result means, who should use it, and where the model breaks down. No vague "your result is X" — we explain the formula, the assumptions, and what would change the answer.
All 32 tools run client-side. We don't store anything, we don't ask for email, and we don't pop modals in your face. That makes us boring — which is exactly what an honest calculator site should be.
They're built on published formulas (MET compendium, Minetti grade-adjusted pace, Looney pack-load energy model, Bortle scale, NIOSH UV) — not invented numbers. But they're models, not measurements. Always sanity-check against how your body actually feels. We document the assumptions under "Limitations" on every tool page.
Yes. The site runs ad-supported via Google AdSense. We chose placements that don't fight the tools — sidebar, after the result, before the footer — never inside inputs or near primary buttons.
No. Calculations happen in your browser. Refreshing the page wipes everything. Read the full privacy policy.
No. These are planning aids for outdoor recreation. They are not medical advice, not nutritional advice, and not a substitute for a qualified guide. See disclaimer.
Purpose. TrailLab is a small editorial project that publishes planning calculators for people who recreate outdoors. We built it because the popular online versions of these tools all give the same thin answer — usually a single number with no interpretation. Outdoor decisions are made by feel and judgment, but a good calculator should at least frame the decision honestly.
Who it's for. Day hikers, section hikers, trail runners, ultralight backpackers, car campers, stargazers, and outdoor-photography hobbyists who want a quick second opinion before they go. If you need clinical precision, see a sports physiologist. If you need route-finding precision, see a guide service.
What it's not for. This is not a substitute for local weather forecasts (use your national weather service), avalanche bulletins, ranger station updates, or a qualified outdoor instructor. Our calculators do not know your local terrain, snowpack, wildlife behavior, or current conditions.
How we built it. Each tool runs entirely client-side in JavaScript. No accounts, no servers storing your data, no tracking pixels. We rely on established published formulas where possible and call out where we're estimating. The site is statically generated and serves plain HTML.
Limitations. All calculators are models. A hiking-calorie estimator can't read your sweat rate. A backpack optimizer can't see your hiking gait. Use the results as starting points, not as prescriptions. If something contradicts your experience, trust your experience.
Editorial independence. We don't accept payment to bias a tool's result. We don't promote specific brands. Ads (when shown) are clearly labeled and never disguised as buttons or warnings.

Summary: We do not collect, store, or sell your personal data. The calculators run in your browser. We use Google AdSense, which uses cookies.
Personal data: None. You do not create an account, and we do not ask for your name, email, or location. Inputs you type into a calculator stay in your browser and are wiped on page reload.
Automatic data: Like most websites, our hosting server logs basic request data (timestamp, requested URL, user-agent, referrer, IP address) for the purpose of preventing abuse and measuring aggregate traffic. This data is retained for a short period and is not linked to a personal profile.
We use Google AdSense to display ads. Google AdSense uses cookies to serve ads based on a user's prior visits to our site or other sites on the Internet.
This site is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect information from children.
If you are in the EEA / UK, you have rights under GDPR including access, rectification, erasure, and restriction of processing. Since we do not hold personal data about you, most of these rights are moot — but you may contact us to confirm.
We may update this policy. The "Last updated" date at the top will reflect the change. Material changes will be announced on this page.

The information and tools provided on TrailLab are for general informational and recreational planning purposes only. They are not professional advice.
Calorie, heart-rate, hydration, and acclimatization outputs are estimates based on average populations. They are not prescriptions. Consult a physician before changing your exercise, diet, or altitude exposure if you have any relevant condition (cardiovascular, respiratory, metabolic, pregnancy, etc.).
Bear, weather, and wildlife outputs are not safety guarantees. Always check current conditions from official sources — local ranger stations, national weather services, avalanche centers, and wildlife agencies. Outdoor activities carry inherent risk.
Nothing on this site constitutes legal, financial, or professional outdoor-guide advice.
We strive to keep formulas current and reflect published science. Despite that, calculators may contain errors. Always cross-check important decisions with primary sources (e.g., NOAA for weather, NPS for trail conditions, your physician for medical questions).
All tools are provided "as is" without warranty of any kind, express or implied. We do not guarantee that the operation of the site will be uninterrupted or error-free.
This site displays ads served by Google AdSense. We may also display clearly-labeled affiliate links for outdoor gear retailers. Affiliate relationships, when present, do not influence tool outputs or content. Sponsored placements, if any, will be clearly marked.
